Another pop culture icon is a fully customized 1996 Chevrolet Corvette (Lot #791) configured to look like the Mach 5 from “Speed Racer.”
“A number of iconic collectible vehicles are crossing the block in Florida that would add a bit of fun to any collection,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Our Palm Beach docket features celebrity and pop culture cars with Hollywood provenance, like Will Ferrell’s Mercedes-Benz 450SL. We’re especially excited about offering two vehicles owned by NASCAR driver Kyle Busch and his wife Samantha. They purchased their custom 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air and 1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible during our 2014 Scottsdale Auction, and the cars remained in their collection for over a decade before changing hands. It will be great to have Kyle and Samantha with us to watch these incredible collectible vehicles cross the block in Palm Beach.”
The custom 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air (Lot #456) is powered by V-8 engine with automatic transmission. The recipient of a frame-off restoration, it is finished in Twilight Turquoise and features one-piece California bumpers. The interior is trimmed in custom natural leather with Aeristo leather upholstery and German square-weave carpet, including a Dakota Digital dash, a custom console, air conditioning, power steering and power windows. The professionally restored 1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible (Lot #457) is powered by a rebuilt 312ci V-8 engine producing 240hp, paired with an automatic transmission. The Dusk Rose exterior includes a matching hardtop, a white convertible soft-top and Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with wide whitewall tires. Kyle and Samantha Busch are planning to be at the Palm Beach Auction for the sale.
The 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS Targa (Lot #716) was used in the “Magnum, P.I.” pilot episode, “Don’t Eat the Snow in Hawaii,” and early Season 1 filming for the CBS hit series. Seat modifications, with adjustments for additional legroom, were made to accommodate the 6-foot-4 frame of the show’s star, actor Tom Selleck. The car is powered by a V-8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. Owned by the legendary Hollywood actor and comedian, Will Ferrell, the Silver Green 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL roadster (Lot #371) is powered by a V-8 with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and factory-rated at 180hp. The interior is trimmed in dark green leather upholstery and includes bucket seats, power windows, central locking and air conditioning.
The 1996 Chevrolet Corvette “Speed Racer” re-creation (Lot #791) is powered by a fuel-injected LT1 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The custom build is configured as a fully customized version of the Speed Racer race car theme with updated mechanical components. The exterior is finished in white with red and yellow accents inspired by the Mach 5 design, including distinct yellow headlights. It is equipped with a convertible soft-top along with a new radiator, new brakes and all new heater hoses. The interior is finished in red and features seats displaying the “5” logo.
“These collectibles are fantastic conversation pieces, giving the public a great opportunity to own something truly special,” said Jackson. “And considering the proximity and love for marine motorsports in Florida, we’re also including some remarkable powerboats on this year’s docket.”
Two powerboats ready to cross the Barrett-Jackson auction block in Palm Beach include a 2006 Donzi 38 ZR (Lot #451) and a custom 2002 Intercept Boats Night Cat 27 (Lot #677). Powered by twin Mercury Racing 525 EFI V-8 engines, professionally rebuilt to deliver 600hp each, the Donzi 38 ZR offers a completely reimagined interior featuring premium Alcantara upholstery, new helm chairs, custom SeaDek flooring and refined finishes throughout.
