The 2026 Sonora Rally to Light Your Way to Dakar through Mexico’s Legendary Landscapes

Adventure has always been the foundation of Rally Raid. Long before podium celebrations and championship points, the discipline was built on exploration, navigation, and the quiet courage required to follow a roadbook into places most people will never see. It remains one of the few motorsports where the experience itself—the journey, the terrain, and the personal limits discovered along the way—matters as much as the result.
The 2026 Sonora Rally embraces that spirit once again.
This year’s event will traverse some of the most remarkable landscapes in northern Sonora, passing through regions surrounding Puerto Libertad, Caborca, and San Luis Río Colorado—areas known for their rugged desert terrain, undisturbed coastline, and deep cultural history. For competitors arriving from across North America and beyond, these environments offer something rare in modern motorsport: vast open spaces, demanding navigation, and a sense of discovery that feels both timeless and completely new.

The rally has long served as a proving ground for competitors chasing bigger ambitions. Over the years, racers from the United States, Mexico, and Canada who first tested themselves in Sonora have gone on to compete at the Dakar Rally, transforming regional experience into global opportunity. In 2026, the event again welcomes an international field, with competitors from countries across North America and Europe, further reinforcing Sonora Rally’s growing reputation as a destination event in Rally Raid. Notable racers such as Mark Samuels, Sara Price, and Skyler Howes (just to name a few) have each won the Road to Dakar prize, helping them to fulfill their ambitions overseas, and proving Sonora as a substantial launching point for several careers in Motorsports.
As the continent’s premier Road to Dakar event, Sonora Rally continues to provide meaningful pathways toward the sport’s most iconic competition. Moto competitors who complete the rally will earn six points toward Dakar eligibility. In contrast, competitors in the SSV category will once again battle on the “Road to Dakar” for a free entry toward the 2027 Dakar Rally*,prize valued at $32,000.

Alongside this initiative, the Sonora Rally Dakar Dreams prize, offered in conjunction with Off-Piste Adventure, provides the winner of the Dakar Dreams category with $10,000 toward their Dakar Rally entry for 2027*. Off-Piste Adventure is a grassroots effort devoted to opening the doors of Rally Raid to new riders, helping competitors access the knowledge, training, and opportunities required to pursue the sport’s most ambitious goals. While the racing itself remains the centerpiece, the 2026 rally also returns to something deeply embedded in its early identity: community.
This year’s route will feature two nights of camping at a remote bivouac, bringing competitors, teams, and organizers together in a rustic desert setting far removed from modern distractions. Evenings around the bonfires will be marked by shared meals and the exchange of stories between racers from around the globe. Local cuisine, regional culture, and a special Sonora Rally–branded artisanal beer will add to the atmosphere, creating an experience that celebrates not just competition, but the camaraderie that defines Rally Raid.
The event also welcomes the continued involvement of Fox Racing and Method Race Wheels; both have emerged as important contributors within the growing Rally Raid ecosystem. As more professional teams enter the discipline and competition continues to evolve, both brands have steadily built a reputation for producing reliable equipment capable of meeting the demands of long-distance desert racing. Their presence at Sonora Rally reflects a broader trend as Rally Raid continues to attract new manufacturers, technologies, and competitors to the sport.

For many competitors, the Sonora Rally represents a first step into the world of navigation racing. For others, it is a return to a proving ground that has shaped careers and tested limits for years. Whether chasing Dakar ambitions or simply seeking the experience of Rally Raid in its purest form, the event remains one of the most distinctive challenges in North American motorsport. As engines fire and roadbooks unfold, another chapter begins in the Land of the Sun…burning a path for your pilgrimage to Dakar.
